Trump Escalates Trade War with New Tariffs on Canadian Goods

The trade war between Canada and the US has escalated further as President Trump signs new executive orders imposing tariffs on Canadian goods. The measures block imports of certain products, including motorcycles, dairy products, and a range of alcoholic beverages. The tariffs will also target golf carts, desks, and mattresses, with a 50% duty applied to these items.

Canada's Trade Minister Dominic LeBlanc says the government is assessing the latest measures from the US administration. Ottawa has already imposed dollar-for-dollar counter-tariffs on $28 billion worth of US goods in response to Trump's previous tariffs.

Unifor, Canada's largest private sector union, is calling for the government to punish companies that leave Canada due to the trade war. National President Lana Payne says the government should use economic levers to defend Canadian jobs and critical sectors of the economy.

Sapporo Breweries Ltd., a Japanese company with operations in Canada, has announced plans to shift some production from Canada to the US to avoid Trump's ban on imports of non-alcoholic beer. However, Sleeman Breweries, which produces Sapporo beer in Canada, says this move is not imminent or finalized.
