Trump Faces Economic Backlash in Michigan Amid New Canadian Tariffs

US President Trump is set to defend his economic policies in Michigan, a state he won in 2020 after it backed Democrat Joe Biden. However, new Canadian tariffs may sting Michigan's economy, which relies heavily on trade with Canada.

The new round of tariffs, as high as 50% on various products including cars, is taking effect on dozens of US trading partners, but Trump has singled out Canada for its retaliatory measures. The president will visit Oakland County, which encompasses much of Detroit's northern suburbs, and talk up his administration's creation of manufacturing jobs and foreign investment in the US.

The White House says Trump will make the case that his policies have boosted the auto industry, but critics argue that the tariffs will hurt Michigan's economy. The state has seen parts of its economy affected by previous rounds of tariffs on imported cars and auto parts.

Trump's visit coincides with tensions between his administration and Canada over a new border bridge. A planned joint celebration was scrapped after Trump suggested the US wanted a 'better' deal on the bridge it co-owns with Canada, leading to an agreement on splitting tolls.
