Trump Gives Fed Chief Free Rein to Raise Interest Rates
President Donald Trump has signaled that he will not try to influence Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh's decision on interest rates. When asked about Warsh's potential rate increase, Trump said he trusts his appointee to do what is necessary and expressed respect for him.
'No,' Trump replied when asked if he opposes the potential rate hike. 'I have a lot of respect for him, and he'll do what he has to do.'
Trump also reiterated that he believes interest rates in the US are too high, stating that 'we should have the lowest interest rates in the world.' He pointed out that other countries pay lower interest rates due to their business ties with the US.
In a speech at the annual Jackson Hole Economic Policy Symposium on August 31, Warsh said that while inflation numbers have been better than expected, they do not indicate an improvement in underlying trends. He emphasized the importance of focusing on price stability and keeping inflation below the 2% target.
