Trump-Imposed Tariffs Escalate Canada-US Trade War, Threatening Jobs and Economy
Canada and the United States are locked in a trade war that threatens to intensify job losses and economic damage. The latest escalation occurred on August 22, when the US imposed 50% tariffs on $27.6 billion worth of Canadian goods, including steel, aluminum, autos, lumber, and dairy products.
These new tariffs are on top of existing US trade barriers targeting Canadian industries such as steel, aluminum, and autos. The move is a response to Canada's refusal to accept the US demands for changes to the proposed Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA).
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney had initially claimed that negotiations with the US were making 'substantial progress,' prompting Washington to delay imposing new tariffs. However, Carney ultimately pulled Canadian negotiators out of talks, citing US demands as 'unfair' and 'uneconomic.'
The impact of these trade tensions is already being felt on both sides of the border. The Bank of Canada reported that Canadian steel exports to the US had fallen by half following the imposition of 50% tariffs on steel.
