Trump Imposes 50% Tariffs on Canadian Imports Amid Ongoing Trade War
US President Donald Trump's trade war with Canada has been ongoing for several years, causing uncertainty and strain on both countries' economies. In January of 2025, Trump announced his intention to impose a 25% tariff on imports from Canada, invoking a national emergency over undocumented immigration and drug trafficking.
The tariffs were initially set to take effect on February 4, 2025, but were later pushed back with a 30-day pause. During this time, the US rolled out limited tariffs on Canadian imports starting March 4. However, Canada responded by imposing retaliatory levies worth $29.8 billion Canadian dollars ($20.7 billion) on US imports.
The trade tensions continued to escalate in the following months, with Trump announcing reciprocal tariffs on nearly all of America's trading partners in April 2025. The 25% tariff on Canadian goods was also implemented in June 2025, prompting Canada's Prime Minister Mark Carney to match the rate with a tariff on non-USMCA compliant vehicles imported from the US.
The latest development saw Trump imposing 50% tariffs on $20 billion worth of Canadian imports in July 2025. Carney responded by promising to match the new import taxes, saying 'we will do it dollar for dollar.'
