Trump Lashes Out at Canadian Dollar's Weakness Amid Trade Tensions
US President Donald Trump has expressed his dissatisfaction with the Canadian dollar's weakness against the US dollar, stating that it is not acceptable to Washington. In a post on the Truth Social platform, he mentioned that this situation has persisted for years but will no longer be allowed to continue.
The comments come after Canada announced tariffs on imports of about 700 US goods worth 27.6 billion Canadian dollars from September 8th. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney responded by saying that Canada's reply would be 'dollar for dollar' and that the country would not accept Washington's proposal.
Canadian Finance Minister Francois-Philippe Champagne had previously stated that Ottawa would impose tariffs worth more than 27 billion dollars on US goods in a reciprocal move. The two countries have repeatedly experienced tariff tensions, which have overshadowed their bilateral economic relations in recent years.
