Trump Lifts Tariff on Irish Whiskey Amid Widespread Calls

US President Donald Trump announced at the Irish Open golf tournament in Doonbeg, Ireland that he plans to remove a 10% tariff on Irish whiskey. The decision comes after widespread calls from various individuals and groups, including Irish Prime Minister Micheál Martin and golfer Shane Lowry.

The current tariff rate of 10% was reduced from 15% in July, as part of Trump's standard tariff imposed on most imports from the European Union. In April, Trump had lifted certain tariffs on UK whiskey, creating an imbalance with Ireland.

Chris Swonger, president & CEO of the Distilled Spirits Council of the United States, welcomed the decision saying it would provide a 'welcome boost for retailers, restaurants, consumers and the American economy' ahead of the holiday season. The Irish Whiskey Association had also called for the removal of tariffs in May.
