Trump Policies Force Fed to Hike Rates Amid Rising Inflation
President Trump's policies are putting pressure on the Federal Reserve to hike interest rates this week, forcing Chairman Kevin Warsh to make a difficult decision. The Fed has been forecasting rate cuts in recent months, but the current inflation outlook is forcing their hand. The president's tariffs and Iran war have led to sharp changes in inflation expectations.
WTI crude oil futures are currently trading at around $100 a barrel, and the average Fed official was still forecasting a rate cut just six months ago. However, with the ongoing Iran war showing no signs of resolution and diesel prices surging to $6 a gallon, it's clear that inflation is on the rise.
Even though the president has been calling for rate cuts and picking a chairman who he suggested was on board, Warsh has maintained his independence. In fact, in his first congressional testimony, Warsh said that a sign of his independence came in his failure to cut rates as the president had desired.
