Trump Predicts 20% Annualized GDP Growth, Disagrees with Fed on Interest Rates
U.S. President Donald Trump made headlines on Monday by predicting that the U.S. economy could grow at rates as high as 20%. This would be a significant increase from current growth rates, which have been around 1.5% and 2.1% in recent quarters. The last time the economy grew at such a rapid pace was during the third quarter of 2020, when it surged at an annualized rate of 34.9%. This was largely due to businesses reopening after widespread Covid-19 shutdowns.
Trump argued that even with such rapid growth, interest rates should not be raised by the Federal Reserve. He claims that strong economic growth does not necessarily cause inflation, and that the Fed's focus on fighting inflation is misplaced. However, many Fed watchers expect the Federal Open Market Committee to raise rates at its next meeting in September.
Trump's comments came as he continues to push for lower borrowing costs. 'We should have the lowest interest rates anywhere in the world,' he said. He also pointed out that in the past, good economic news was often met with lower interest rates, not higher ones.
