Trump Predicts Trade Deal with Canada Will Happen 'Fairly Soon'
US President Donald Trump believes that his administration can reach a trade deal with Canada 'fairly soon'. This comes after he repeated claims that the US has been 'ripped off' by its northern neighbour for 50 years. The comments were made during a meeting in Ireland, where Trump was speaking alongside Irish Prime Minister Micheál Martin.
According to data from the U.S. Census Bureau, Canada exported $382 billion in goods to the US in 2025 and imported $334 billion. A TD report on trade between the two countries found that in 2024, Canada was the US's second-largest trading partner, behind Mexico. Some 34 states sell more goods to Canada than any other foreign economy.
Trump imposed 50% tariffs on nearly $28 billion in Canadian goods after formal talks broke down on August 21. Canadian retaliatory tariffs took effect on Tuesday, and Trump later signed orders to ban imports of some Canadian products, including most alcohol.
