Trump Pressures Warsh for Rate Cuts Ahead of Key FOMC Meeting
US President Donald Trump has once again pressed Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh to cut interest rates, claiming that borrowing costs should be lower than any other country. This is despite Warsh's recent warning about inflation and his suggestion that the Fed may need to raise rates if it doesn't see sufficient progress in bringing down inflation.
Speaking at a press conference in the Oval Office, Trump emphasized that 'the United States should be paying much lower interest rates than any other country in the world'. He expressed confidence in Warsh's ability to make the right decision on rate policy, stating that 'he'll do what he has to do'. This is not the first time Trump has urged the Fed to lower rates, and his remarks come ahead of next month's Federal Open Market Committee meeting.
The personal consumption expenditures price index, which serves as the Fed's preferred inflation gauge, rose 3.7% in July from a year earlier, remaining above the central bank's 2% target. This has sparked concerns that the Fed may need to take action to prevent inflation from getting out of control.
