Trump Rekindles Bid to Oust Fed Governor Lisa Cook Amid Mortgage Fraud Allegations

US President Donald Trump has renewed his attempt to remove Lisa Cook from the Federal Reserve's Board of Governors. In an August 5 letter, White House Deputy Chief of Staff Dan Scavino informed Cook that Trump is 'considering' whether to remove her. This move comes after a Supreme Court ruling in June thwarted Trump's initial effort to fire Cook.

Scavino cited the court's decision in Trump v. Cook, which emphasized the need for the Federal Reserve to remain free of political influence. The letter gives Cook 21 days to respond to allegations that she committed mortgage fraud in 2021 by listing two different homes as her primary residence on mortgage applications.

Cook has strongly disputed these allegations, and other financial records appear to undermine the Trump administration's claims. Her lawyers, Abbe Lowell and Norm Eisen, stated that the allegations against Cook are 'as baseless now as they were a year ago' when President Trump tried to remove her.
