Trump Renews Bid to Oust Fed's First Black Woman Governor
US President Donald Trump has renewed his attempt to fire Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook, citing unproven mortgage fraud allegations against her. The White House gave Cook three weeks to respond to the allegations in a letter seen by Reuters.
Cook's lawyer dismissed the claims as 'baseless' and stated that there is no valid cause for removing her from her position.
This is not the first time Trump has tried to remove Cook. Last year, he cited mortgage fraud in an attempt to fire her, but the Supreme Court blocked his effort in a 5-4 ruling in June.
The High Court's decision did not address the validity of the allegations against Cook, leaving it as an open question whether she committed 'gross negligence' or 'deceitful and potentially criminal conduct', as Trump's letter alleges.
