Trump Revives Bid to Fire Fed Governor Over Mortgage Fraud Allegations
President Donald Trump is considering renewing his push to fire Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook over mortgage fraud allegations, according to a letter from the White House Personnel Office Director. The letter, sent this week, gave Cook three weeks to respond to the administration's claims that she made false statements on one or more mortgage agreements.
The allegations prompted Trump to announce Cook's termination in August 2025, but she has remained in her role amid an ongoing legal battle over his ability to remove members of the independent central bank. The Supreme Court issued a 5-4 ruling earlier this summer that allowed Cook to remain in her position while the case challenging her dismissal plays out.
The White House's letter explained that there is 'sufficient reason to believe' Cook made false statements and requested a written response with evidence within 21 days. The letter stated, 'You are hereby provided notice that the President is considering removing you from your position as a member of the Fed's Board of Governors.'
