Trump Revives Bid to Oust Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook
US President Donald Trump has renewed his effort to fire Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook, despite a significant setback in June when the US Supreme Court blocked his previous attempt. The White House sent a letter to Cook, signed by Deputy Chief of Staff Dan Scavino, alleging that she committed crimes related to mortgage fraud and demanded she respond within three weeks.
Cook's attorney, Abbe Lowell, called the allegations 'baseless' and said they were an attempt to remove her from her position. This is not the first time Trump has made such accusations against Cook; last year, he also cited mortgage fraud in his effort to fire her.
The Federal Reserve had no comment on the matter, but a majority of its board members were appointed by President Joe Biden, who succeeded Trump as president.
