Trump Revives Pressure Campaign on Fed to Lower Rates

US President Donald Trump has reignited his pressure campaign on the Federal Reserve to lower interest rates, warning that he will cut off trade with countries that have a deficit with the US if they don't comply.

In a social media post on September 4, Trump called on Fed Chairman Kevin Warsh and board members to 'get smart' and be 'patriots for a change', urging them to lower rates immediately.

Trump's demand comes after the August jobs report showed stronger-than-expected numbers, which could bolster the case for Fed officials to raise rates at their next policy meeting starting September 15.

The president claimed that high interest rates put the US at an unfair disadvantage and threatened to cut off trade with countries like Switzerland, Mexico, and the European Union, citing them as examples of partners who benefited from their ties with the US.
