Trump Says Yen Intervention is Signal of Friendship with Japan

US President Donald Trump has explained the recent currency-market intervention that lifted the yen as a sign of friendship between the US and Japan. Speaking aboard Air Force One on August 2, Trump cited the 'good relationship' with Japan and said 'they wanted a little bit of help, and we're always there for Japan.'

The coordinated operations in Tokyo and New York last week triggered a dramatic rebound in the yen, raising the stakes for anyone betting against it. The intervention was seen as a major move by both countries to shore up the yen.

In his comments, Trump also acknowledged Japan's past actions, saying 'Japan's always been very good to us, with the exception of course of Pearl Harbour.'
