Trump Seeks Global Interest Rate Low Amid Trade and Inflation Concerns
US President Donald Trump stated that the United States should have the lowest interest rates in the world, regardless of the Federal Reserve's data on inflation and the economy. He made this comment during an Irish golf tournament event a few days before the Fed's next meeting.
The target range for the federal funds rate currently stands between 3.5% and 3.75%. Trump expressed uncertainty about whether Fed officials would raise rates at this week's meeting, which is scheduled to conclude on Wednesday.
Trump also repeated his threat to halt trade with countries that have a trade deficit with the US if the Fed does not cut interest rates. He emphasized the importance of having a surplus in trade or achieving a zero balance.
According to some Fed officials, prolonged high inflation could make it more difficult for the central bank to return the economy to its target level. This is a concern amid increased import taxes introduced by Trump and rising energy prices linked to the war in Iran.
