Trump Slams Canada's Currency Gap as 'Unacceptable'

President Donald Trump has raised eyebrows in Canada after calling the country's currency gap with the US 'unacceptable' on his Truth Social platform. The Canadian dollar, also known as the loonie, has been falling sharply against the greenback over the last decade, reaching parity before Justin Trudeau became prime minister. Today, one Canadian dollar is worth about 72 cents.

Trump's comments come after Ottawa walked away from trade negotiations with the US last month. The two sides have engaged in trade strife since Trump's 'Liberation Day' announcement in April 2025. Canada has a significant trade surplus with the US, having recorded $769 million in July alone.

The USD/CAD currency pair fell 0.16% to 1.3816 on Monday after Trump's comments, but the loonie rose slightly overall during the quiet Labor Day holiday trading session.
