Trump Slams Double-Digit Tariffs on Dozens of Countries Amid Ongoing Trade Tensions
President Donald Trump has imposed double-digit tariffs on dozens of countries, effective from midnight Friday. The new levies target 16 US trading partners, including Canada, with tariffs ranging from 10% to 12.5%. This move comes after the Supreme Court struck down Trump's earlier global tariffs last year.
The Liberty Justice Center, a libertarian advocacy group, has filed a lawsuit in the US Court of International Trade in New York, challenging the new tariffs. The group argues that the administration is using the Tariff Act of 1974 to impose restrictions on imports produced by forced labor, but is actually trying to maintain a wall of tariffs around the US economy.
Trump's move has been met with criticism from various quarters, including Canada, which disinvited the US from its opening ceremony for a new bridge over the Detroit River. Trump responded by saying he was 'fine' with the decision, given that Canada pays substantial tariffs to the US.
