Trump Slaps Canada with 50% Tariffs Over Auto, Alcohol, and Dairy Disputes

President Donald Trump has imposed 50% tariffs on most Canadian goods, citing unfair treatment of American autos, alcohol, and dairy products. The move could lead to a new wave of economic chaos, with risks of higher inflation and further fraying of relations between the two nations.

The administration official previewing the action said that Canada was one of the only nations other than China that retaliated against Trump's previous tariffs and must be held accountable. The 50% tariffs would exclude energy products, potash, fish, and critical minerals, but include goods previously protected by the USMCA.

Critics warn that the use of a Great Depression-era law to impose the tariffs broadens some of the risks, as those tariffs could be applied to other U.S. trading partners and inject 'massive uncertainty' into the global economy.
