Trump Targets Canadian Imports with New Tariffs and Bans
The Trump administration has added dozens of new items to its list of goods subject to 50% tariffs or outright banned from importation into the US. These include pony fur, bamboo furniture, golf carts, and mezcal, among others.
The move is aimed at Canada's retaliatory tariffs, which took effect on Tuesday, as well as what the administration calls Canada's 'discriminatory' treatment of American goods.
A senior administration official said that the items were deliberately chosen to lessen the financial hit for Americans. The products on the list are not ones the US relies on Canada for, either because they are readily available domestically or can be imported from other trading partners.
The new tariffs and import bans are expected to have little effect on either economy, with some experts estimating that they will cover only 0.25% of Canada's exports to the US.
