Trump Targets Fed Governor Again Over Mortgage Allegations
Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook has responded to renewed threats from the White House to remove her from the central bank's governing board. In a letter sent on Wednesday, Cook's attorneys argued that there is no legal basis for President Trump to fire her over allegations of mortgage fraud.
Cook was first targeted by Trump last year after he accused her of committing mortgage fraud in connection with two homes she declared as 'primary residences' in mortgage applications. According to officials in the Trump administration, primary residences can sometimes receive lower mortgage rates or down payments than second homes.
Cook has denied any wrongdoing and stated that any errors were unintentional. She said that referring to one of the homes as a 'vacation home' did not amount to deceitful behavior towards lenders.
