Trump Targets Fed Governor in Bid for Rate Cut
US President Donald Trump has renewed his efforts to remove Federal Reserve governor Lisa Cook from her position, citing allegations of mortgage fraud. The move is seen as an attempt by Trump to gain more influence over the US central bank and its decision-making.
Cook was first targeted for removal earlier this year after a social media post by Trump, but the Supreme Court intervened, stating that proper notice had not been given and that Cook's 14-year term would not end until 2038. The court also noted that a Fed governor can only be removed 'for cause', which typically means serious wrongdoing or malfeasance while in office.
The latest attempt to remove Cook comes after Trump loyalist Bill Pulte alleged that she misled her lender by claiming two separate properties as her principal place of residence to gain a lower interest rate. However, Cook's lawyers have described the allegations as 'baseless' and stated that the issue is about process, not the underlying facts.
The move has raised concerns over the independence of the Fed and its ability to make decisions without political interference. Trump has long been obsessed with lower US interest rates, which he believes will boost growth. However, experts warn that this could lead to higher inflation and undermine the credibility of the central bank.
