Trump Targets Fed Governor Lisa Cook with New Bid to Oust Her

U.S. President Donald Trump is making another attempt to remove Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook from her position, despite a Supreme Court setback in June. A letter seen by Reuters shows that the White House told Cook she must respond to unproven mortgage fraud allegations within three weeks. The allegations, made by Deputy Chief of Staff Dan Scavino, claim Cook committed crimes punishable by up to 30 years in prison and questioned her trustworthiness as a Fed governor.

Cook's lawyer, Abbe D. Lowell, has stated that 'there is no valid cause' for removing Cook from her position. The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment. This move comes after Trump earlier this week issued another order attempting to limit birthright citizenship, which was also blocked by the Supreme Court.

The Supreme Court refused to allow Cook's firing in June, standing firm on preserving the central bank's independence against Trump's unprecedented challenge. In their ruling, Chief Justice John Roberts stated that Trump 'failed to afford Cook the procedural protections to which she was entitled by statute.'
