Trump Targets Fed Governor Over Mortgage Allegations in Unprecedented Move
Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook is facing allegations of mortgage fraud, which could lead to her removal from the Fed board. According to a letter submitted by Cook's lawyers, she did not knowingly commit fraud and instead made an 'inadvertent error' on her mortgage documents.
The controversy began when Federal Housing Finance Agency director Bill Pulte accused Cook of breaking the law by listing two homes as her primary residence simultaneously. This accusation prompted President Donald Trump to try and fire Cook, a move that would be unprecedented in Fed history if successful.
Cook's lawyers framed the situation as an attempt by Trump to exert influence over the Federal Reserve, rather than a genuine concern about mortgage fraud. They pointed out that 'an inadvertent error is not fraud' and that even Trump officials have made similar mistakes in the past.
The Supreme Court previously ruled that Trump did not provide Cook with adequate process for disputing the allegations, but allowed her to stay on the job pending further investigation. The White House has since restarted the process of firing Cook through a more careful process, giving her a deadline to respond to the accusations.
