Trump Targets Federal Reserve Governor Over Mortgage Fraud Allegations
Lisa Cook, a member of the Federal Reserve board of governors, is fighting to keep her job after President Donald Trump sought to remove her over allegations of mortgage fraud. Cook has denied any wrongdoing and argues that she made an 'inadvertent' mistake on a form provided by her lender.
The Supreme Court had previously rebuffed Trump's initial attempt to fire Cook, ruling that he could only remove her 'for good reason.' Chief Justice John Roberts said Cook was entitled to some explanation of the evidence at issue, a chance to respond, and a deadline for her response.
Cook's lawyer, Abbe Lowell, stated that Trump's attacks on Cook are an attempt to force the Federal Reserve to bend to his will. He also pointed out that other members of Trump's Cabinet had done the same thing, making Cook's mistake 'unintentional, not criminal.'
