Trump Targets Federal Reserve Member Lisa Cook Again Amid Allegations of Fraud
President Donald Trump is again trying to fire Federal Reserve Board of Governors member Lisa Cook, despite being rebuffed by both a federal judge and the Supreme Court earlier this year. The White House sent Cook a letter last week informing her that Trump is considering firing her due to allegations of fraud related to mortgage documents signed years before she became a governor.
Cook has maintained her innocence throughout the process and has called out Trump for placing undue pressure on the Federal Reserve, an independent agency responsible for setting interest rates. The Supreme Court's ruling in May allowed Cook to stay in her position, with Chief Justice John Roberts writing that only after Cook responds to the charges can a final decision be made.
This is not the first time Trump has tried to fire Cook over these allegations; last year he attempted to remove her from her position, but was unsuccessful. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent made similar mortgage claims as Cook and did not face any consequences. Critics argue that Trump's actions are an attempt to interfere with the independence of the Federal Reserve.
