Trump Tariffs Hit Louisiana Tourism
Louisiana's tourism economy is facing another challenge due to President Trump's latest move. The state's chief tourism officer, Lieutenant Governor Billy Nungesser, says that the new 50-percent tariffs on Canadian goods will keep Canadians away from Louisiana.
Nungesser points out that Canada is a significant market for Louisiana, accounting for about 40% of its international visitors. He notes that efforts to attract Canadians back to the state have been hindered by Trump's previous comments on making Canada the 51st state.
The tariffs are expected to prolong the Canadian holdout from visiting Louisiana, according to Nungesser. Despite this, he is optimistic about continuing to market to Canadian visitors and rebuilding relationships with travel agents and tour operators in Canada.
