Trump Tariffs on Canada Spark Backlash from Critics

President Donald Trump has once again demonstrated his tendency to ignore international agreements and impose tariffs on countries that disagree with him. In this case, he slapped a 50% tariff on various Canadian goods after Canada refused to allow the US to have a say in how they run their economy.

The trade deal between the two nations was already in effect, but Trump added last-minute changes that would require Canada to sacrifice some of its economic sovereignty. Instead of renegotiating, Canada invoked a different agreement that allows them to make trade deals with other countries.

Trump's actions have been widely criticized, particularly after he was told by the Supreme Court that he cannot impose tariffs based on the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) because he has no legal authority to do so. More than $100 billion in illegally imposed tariffs had to be refunded.
