Trump Tariffs on Canadian Goods: Modest Impact Expected
President Trump's recent imposition of 50% tariffs on select Canadian products may have some impact on U.S. prices, but trade experts say it won't be significant due to the narrow scope of the levies.
The new duties apply only to about 5% of Canada's exports to the U.S., which are mainly in the categories of alcohol, dairy goods, paper and wood products, ice hockey equipment, and home decor and fashion items.
According to trade attorney Patrick Childress, a partner at law firm Holland & Knight, 'If Canada's retaliatory tariffs are similarly narrow, then neither set of tariffs would cause immediate, economy-wide upheaval, and both sides could live with them for some time.'
