Trump Tariffs Spark Election Fears Among GOP Strategists

The Trump administration's newly announced tariffs have sparked concerns among Republicans that they may hurt their chances in the upcoming midterm elections.

The tariffs, which went into effect on Friday at midnight, target 60 trading partners and are aimed at addressing forced labor violations. The move comes as President Trump has threatened a 'substantial' tariff against the European Union over its $1 billion fine against Google for noncompliance with the Digital Markets Act.

A recent Fox News poll found that only 33 percent of voters approved of Trump's handling of the economy, while an Economist/YouGov poll found that 47 percent of respondents said the economy is in a poor state. The tariffs have been criticized by Democrats, who argue they will increase costs for consumers.

However, some Republican strategists believe that Trump's tariffs may not have as big of an impact on voters compared with other economic issues like gas prices. They point out that tariffs are one of the few policy areas where Trump's Republican Party is aligned with the labor movement, which has a significant presence in states like Michigan.
