Trump Threatens to Fire Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook Again
Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook has shot down Trump's renewed threat to fire her from the central bank's governing board. In a letter sent late Wednesday, Cook's attorneys argued that there is no legal basis for President Trump to remove her from her position, citing the Supreme Court's ruling last year.
The dispute stems from allegations of mortgage fraud, which Cook denies. The White House had accused Cook of declaring two homes as 'primary residences' in mortgage applications, but Cook claims she referred to one home as a 'vacation home' and did not seek to deceive lenders.
Cook's attorneys stated that the attacks on her are an attempt by President Trump to exert pressure on the Fed. If Trump were able to remove Cook, he could appoint a replacement and gain a majority on the Fed's board, which would give his appointees more influence over monetary policy decisions.
