Trump Threatens to Halt Trade with Deficit Countries Over Interest Rates
President Donald Trump is putting pressure on the Federal Reserve to lower interest rates, threatening to halt trade with countries that have a deficit with the US. The threat comes as the economy faces persistent inflation and affordability concerns.
In a recent post on Truth Social, Trump wrote: 'LOWER THE RATE OR I'LL STOP TRADING WITH COUNTRIES WITH WHICH WE HAVE A DEFICIT.' He added that stopping trade would be better than imposing tariffs. The US ran a $1.2 trillion trade deficit last year and has a deficit with over 100 countries, including major partners like China, Mexico, and Canada.
The Federal Reserve Board, led by Chair Kevin Warsh, has been sending mixed signals ahead of the decision on September 15. While some Fed officials have signaled they are open to raising rates if inflation remains high, others have indicated a willingness to lower them. The central bank has kept rates steady all year, with inflation sitting well above the Fed's 2% target.
Experts say that raising interest rates could help rein in spending and borrowing, cooling the economy and easing inflation. However, this would also increase borrowing costs for consumers, impacting everything from car loans to mortgages at a time when affordability is already weighing on households.
