Trump Threatens to Halt Trades Over Deficit and Interest Rates
US President Donald Trump has issued a warning to the Federal Reserve that unless interest rates are cut, he will stop trading with countries in which the US has a deficit. This stance follows the Bureau of Labor Statistics' report on Friday showing stronger-than-expected job creation in August, which prompted traders to boost bets on a hike later this month.
The Fed had held rates steady, but three policymakers dissented in favor of a hike. Trump took to his Truth Social platform to express his frustration with the current interest rate environment, saying 'We should have the LOWEST RATE of any country in the World … LOWER THE RATE OR I’LL STOP TRADING WITH COUNTRIES WITH WHICH WE HAVE A DEFICIT.'
