Trump believes that high interest rates make it difficult for the US to compete in international trade. He wants the US to have lower interest rates compared to other countries and threatened to stop trading with nations where the US has a deficit if the Fed doesn't comply.
The statement was made on September 4, 2026, the same day the US Bureau of Labor Statistics released its latest employment data. The job creation numbers were stronger than initial estimates, which led market participants to expect a potential interest rate hike later this month instead of a cut.
