Trump Threatens Trade Halt Over Interest Rate Dispute

US President Donald Trump intensified his call for lower interest rates, stating that the US should have some of the lowest borrowing costs globally. He emphasized that high interest rates were placing the country at an unfair disadvantage and urged the Federal Reserve to reduce borrowing costs. In a post on social media, Trump argued that a stronger US economy, demonstrated by 162,000 new jobs added in August, should translate into lower interest rates.

Trump escalated his criticism by linking interest rates to US trade policy, warning that Washington could stop trading with countries where the US has a trade deficit if the Federal Reserve does not lower rates. He stated, 'We should have the LOWEST RATE of any country in the World, like 'the old days.'

The remarks come as financial markets reassess the Federal Reserve's next move following the latest jobs report. The stronger employment figures have increased expectations that the central bank could keep rates higher for longer or potentially consider a rate increase.
