Trump Threatens Trade Halt Over Rate Cuts
President Donald Trump has intensified his pressure campaign against the Federal Reserve (FRB), warning that if it doesn't comply with rate cuts, the United States will halt transactions with countries where it runs trade deficits.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump stated: 'If they don't cut interest rates, the United States will stop trading with countries where we have trade deficits.'
He added that 'high interest rates are putting the United States at a tremendous disadvantage' and insisted that 'U.S. interest rates should be lower than any other country in the world.'
This threat marks an unprecedented escalation of Trump's pressure campaign against the central bank, which has repeatedly demanded rate cuts in the past.
The August U.S. jobs report showed employment growth far exceeding market expectations, reinforcing the notion that the Fed may not need to cut rates as markets are pricing in.
