Trump Threatens Trade Restrictions Over Interest Rates
US President Donald Trump has threatened to stop trading with countries that have a deficit with the United States unless the Federal Reserve cuts interest rates. In a post on Truth Social, Trump said 'We should have the LOWEST RATE of any country in the World ... LOWER THE RATE OR I'LL STOP TRADING WITH COUNTRIES WITH WHICH WE HAVE A DEFICIT.'
This comes after the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported stronger-than-expected job creation in August, which has prompted traders to boost bets on a hike later this month.
The strong jobs report has put pressure on the Fed to raise interest rates, but Trump has been advocating for rate cuts. He has repeatedly demanded that the Fed cut rates, saying high interest rates put the US at a 'very unfair disadvantage.'
