Trump Touts Tariffs in Michigan Amid Voter Concerns Over Prices
US President Donald Trump touted his tariffs as a boost to Michigan's economy at a General Motors event in Milford, northwest of Detroit. He claimed car companies were 'doing better than they've ever done' and that 'Michigan is thriving', crediting himself for the gains.
The rally was attended by supporters who remained warm despite some expressing concerns over high prices and tariff costs. Lisa Scherer, 64, mentioned high gas prices as a major issue, stating it was 'hurting a lot'. Trump offered automakers relief from his auto parts tariffs and extended a short-term rebate until 2030.
Michigan's economy is closely tied to Canada through integrated supply chains, but the US has imposed new import taxes on Canadian imports. Car manufacturers such as GM have invested in expanding domestic production, with plans to move some vehicle production from Mexico to the US starting next year.
