Trump Touts Tariffs in Michigan, Despite Growing Concerns Over Economic Impact

President Donald Trump visited Michigan on Monday to tout his economic policies and revive the auto industry, despite some businesses claiming that his sweeping tariffs have actually hurt the state. At a General Motors facility in Milford, he watched drag races featuring muscle cars and luxury vehicles like the Corvette Z06 and Cadillac Escalade V, events the announcer called 'all America First power.'

During the visit, Trump argued that his economic policies have boosted GM's production domestically, citing the company's plans to expand production in coming years. He also praised GM for its contributions to American manufacturing, saying it was 'amazing what tariffs are doing for GM.'

However, some advocacy groups claim that tariffs have cost Michigan businesses billions of dollars since last spring and are now raising concerns about the impact on the state's economy. Jason Roe, a former executive director of the Michigan Republican Party, warned that Trump's visit may be seen as an attempt to secure the nomination for John James, his preferred gubernatorial candidate.

The new tariffs imposed by Trump could hurt Michigan even more, as the state relies heavily on Canada and the latest round of levies includes items such as cars and auto parts. The US and Canada have been at odds over a new border bridge, with Trump launching the first round of tariffs after alleging that Canada was discriminating against American exports.
