Trump Unleashes Trade Fury on Canada Ahead of Tariff Deadline
US President Donald Trump launched a social media blitz targeting Canada on Monday, just hours before the midnight tariff deadline. He posted several complaints and threats against aircraft maker Bombardier and the Canadian dollar.
In one of his posts, Trump claimed that over 50% of Bombardier's revenue comes from the US, and that they 'live off American buyers, American companies, American airports, and American service.' He threatened to block sales of Bombardier jets in the US if Canada does not comply with his demands.
Trump also complained about the value of the Canadian dollar, calling it an 'imbalance' between the two countries. He claimed that the strong Canadian dollar is a result of Canada blocking US-based companies from operating in Canada.
Jennifer Kavanagh, senior fellow and director of military analysis at Defense Priorities, questioned Trump's authority to block sales of Bombardier jets in the US. She said that while Trump can try to impose tariffs or other economic barriers, he cannot simply ban the sale of Bombardier jets.
