The consumer price index posted its biggest increase in four months, strengthening expectations that the US central bank may raise interest rates.

Trump expressed his desire for lower interest rates during an open golf tournament in Ireland on September 13. He stated that he did not know what decision Fed officials would make this week but emphasized that the United States should pay the lowest interest rates in the world, regardless of the data showing inflation and economic trends.

The president's approval ratings are falling amid the prolonged rise in prices. Trump has repeatedly said that the Fed's interest-rate level gives other countries an advantage at the expense of the United States. He has also criticized former Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell and taken a more favorable view of the Fed's leadership since Kevin Warsh was appointed chair.
