Trump Visits Detroit Amid Feud Over Canada Tariffs
President Donald Trump visited suburban Detroit on Monday to promote his economic record and defend tariffs that have hurt local businesses. The trip comes as midterm election season heats up, with early voting underway for Michigan's August 4 primary.
The GM facility in Milford hosted the event, where Trump observed a drag race demonstration before speaking. His itinerary included stops at General Motors facilities, aiming to boost his economic record and make the case that his policies have boosted the auto industry.
Michigan was one of the battleground states Trump flipped after it backed Democrat Joe Biden in 2020. However, the state has seen parts of its economy affected by the president's tariffs on imported cars and auto parts, with a new round of steep import levies taking effect on dozens of U.S. trading partners.
Trump has singled out Canada with tariffs as high as 50% on a wide array of its products, including cars. The US and Canada have squabbled over the Gordie Howe International Bridge, which links Detroit and Windsor, Ontario, with tensions between his administration and Canada marred the opening of the $4.7 billion bridge.
