Trump Vows to End 'Unacceptable' Canadian Currency Imbalance
President Trump has declared that Canada's currency imbalance with the US will 'no longer' be acceptable. In a post on Truth Social, he stated that the imbalance is 'unacceptable' and has been that way for years.
The Canadian dollar is currently valued at roughly 72 cents to the US dollar, giving Canada its status as a net exporter. According to Statistique Canada, the country's trade surplus in July was $769 million. The US also has a significant trade deficit with Canada, exceeding $48 billion last year, according to data from the U.S. Census Bureau.
The Canadian government is set to impose 'dollar for dollar' import taxes on certain US goods starting Tuesday, two weeks after Trump's 50% levies on $27.6 billion worth of Canadian products took effect. The tariffs will focus on steel, dairy, appliances, agricultural equipment, pulp and paper, and electronics.
Trump has previously targeted Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, suggesting that Canada wants to benefit from being a US state without actually being one. He has also floated the idea of annexing Canada during his second term in office.
