Trump Warns Carney of 'Very Bad' Fallout in Trade Standoff

President Donald Trump has warned Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney of severe economic and political consequences if their countries' trade talks collapse.

In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump stated that Canadian politicians making him 'the enemy' could lead to the collapse of their economy, calling it 'very bad' for politics. He added that this would be worse than anything that has ever happened to a Canadian politician.

The warning comes amid a trade standoff between the two countries, with Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick accusing Carney of derailing a nearly completed U.S.-Canada trade deal for political reasons. Lutnick claimed Ottawa wanted to gain support ahead of domestic elections by introducing 'crazy ideas' in the final hours of negotiations.

Carney pushed back against Lutnick's accusation, questioning the expertise of 'unelected' U.S. officials on Canadian politics. However, he also stated that a mutually beneficial trade deal with the U.S. remains possible and that Ottawa is ready to negotiate whenever Washington is willing.
