Trump White House Unleashes Vengeful Tariffs on Canada
The White House has invoked Section 338 of the Smoot-Hawley Tariff Act to impose a new 50% tariff on Canadian imports, including wine and hockey sticks. This move comes as part of the administration's 'tariff-of-the-month club,' which has been prolonging its illegal regime of taxing imports.
According to economic historians, the Smoot-Hawley Tariff Act was one of three main interventionist policies that contributed to the Great Depression. The act proved that attempts to fend off foreign competition harm the entire economy and ultimately hurt American industries.
The administration has pivoted from statute to statute in its tariff regime, with Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick claiming that 'without the viability of [International Emergency Economic Powers Act] tariffs, the United States would be weakened and lose the essential tool to address this national emergency most efficiently.'
