Trump's Attempt to Oust Cook from Fed Board Fails Legally
Washington - Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook has sent a letter to the White House stating that President Trump lacks legal grounds to remove her from the central bank's governing board. This development comes after renewed threats from the White House, with Trump seeking to fire Cook for allegedly committing mortgage fraud.
Cook denies the allegations and argues that an inadvertent error is not equivalent to fraud, citing instances where other government officials reportedly made similar mistakes. Her attorneys, Abbe Lowell and Norman Eisen, emphasized in a statement that there is no legal basis for Trump's attempt to remove Cook from her position.
The dispute centers on Cook's mortgage paperwork, with the White House accusing her of declaring two homes as 'primary residences' in mortgage applications. However, Cook asserts that she referred to one of those homes as a 'vacation home' and did not seek to deceive lenders. She maintains that any errors were unintentional.
The outcome of this clash could reshape the Fed board and intensify pressure on central bank independence. If Trump succeeds in removing Cook, he could appoint a replacement, potentially leading to a shift in the balance of power within the Federal Reserve.
