During an Oval Office meeting with US travel executives, President Donald Trump claimed that Canada bars US-based banks from operating there. However, this assertion is false. Federal Reserve data lists eight Canadian banks that operate in the US. The Bank of Canada serves as Canada's central bank and is equivalent to the Federal Reserve in the US. It is not a commercial bank.

Finance professor James Thompson at the University of Waterloo in Ontario notes that confusion arises from differences between US and Canadian regulatory systems. While US banks are permitted to operate in Canada, how they enter the market affects their operations.
