Trump's Calls to Fed Chair Raise Independence Concerns

President Trump has repeatedly called Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh since May, according to The Wall Street Journal. These calls have focused on the economic impact of the Iran war and artificial intelligence (AI), rather than directly discussing interest rates or monetary policy.

The calls are a concern for bond investors who already question Warsh's independence. Last week, the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) voted 9-3 to hold rates steady, with Warsh giving evasive answers at his press conference. This led to a jump in the 30-year Treasury yield to its highest level since before the 2007-08 financial crisis.

Warsh's approach of saying little has been criticized by some Fed officials, including Loretta Mester who led the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland from 2014 to 2024. She expressed concerns that this lack of transparency is unsustainable.

This direct presidential contact with a Fed chair is not new. In the 1970s, President Nixon pressured Fed Chair Arthur Burns to loosen policy ahead of his re-election bid. The tapes released decades later capture that pressure campaign, in which Nixon told Burns 'I really don't care what you do in [or after] April.'

While Trump's calls to Warsh are narrower than Nixon's push for rate cuts, they add context to the independence question surrounding Warsh.
